We often hear news about dogs attacking their owners leaving them seriously injured. However, there are preliminary measures to avoid these circumstances, find out.
How could your dog, always so docile, suddenly become aggressive and attack you? Well, although it is hard to imagine, this is a risk that runs when you acquire a canine, especially if it is a breed that is inclined towards aggressiveness such as Chow Chow, Doberman, Pit Bull or Rottweiler. Do not forget that no matter how harmless a dog looks, it is actually an animal that will react aggressively by nature in certain situations. Below we explain some of the scenarios in which your pet could behave violently, so that you can take precautions.
Defend your territory
It is natural for animals to define their own territory and fight for it. Your dog can find his favorite place in the house or in the yard and take over it, arriving, on extreme occasions, to restrict the passage to you or a member of the family. That is why if you detect that your pet becomes irritable when someone approaches their preferred space, you must show your authority by raising your voice and telling them what is wrong with that behavior. Later you can change the places you usually have in your special corner like toys, the bowl where you eat or a bed, distribute them in different points of the house so that you get accustomed to the different areas and do not take any.
Dominant personality
If your dog growls and behaves aggressively when someone approaches your food or touches your things it is showing a dominant personality trait. This can be an indication that the dog is very aggressive so it would be convenient to be trained by an expert, who could point out if your pet can live together as a family or if for your own safety it is better to return it.
Hunting instinct
We can’t ask a dog, whose breed is predominantly hunting, to refrain from the temptation to run after a target and assault it. It will take a lot of discipline to control the dog looking for a sense of obedience.
Shy
There are timid dogs that, due to insecurity, can feel threatened more easily. Not always the origin of this behavior is for having been mistreated as a puppy, it is simply his personality; therefore, it should be taught to socialize little by little, give it a lot of love and security and integrate it into family activities.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE ATTACKED BY A DOG?
We hope that this situation never occurs, but even so, we give you recommendations that you should share with anyone who has a dog as a pet:
- Any dog that is tied or locked is more prone to attack by the psychological state that lives to be limited, so never try to caress or touch it.
- Do not trust any animal you do not know, if you approach it, do not touch it. The only thing you could do is talk to him in a calm voice so that he identifies you as someone harmless, but be respectful and do not touch him.
- If you walk your dog and suddenly your pet begins to bark at someone or becomes aggressive with another dog you should gently hold the leash, if you pull it too hard you will only increase its fury.
- If you are walking your dog and you find another person with a dog, avoid petting the other dog. Your pet may feel jealous and suddenly become aggressive. Let the dogs meet first.
- If a dog runs towards you, stay still, never run. Be still and calm and show the palms of your hands as a sign that you are harmless; try to talk to him in a voice that reassures him.
- Do not bother or try to play with a dog while eating. From puppy you can caress it while eating so that it gets used to you, but you will have to be careful, seeing if it bothers you that you touch it.
- If we jog or bike down the street and a dog chases us, do not try to escape. Better stop and do the same as in the previous recommendation, that the dog see that you are harmless.
- Do not look a dog in the eye because it is a threat to them and both can retreat and attack you.
- Never try to separate two dogs that are fighting. Throw them water or use a stick or the same strap; keep in mind that if you intervene, your dog is very aggressive and can even attack you too.
