How and why to plant sage in the garden or garden
January 30, 2018
Aromatics are fundamental plants in our garden and not only for its culinary or medicinal benefits, but because having them around our garden provides us with a lot of benefits and advantages, such as combating pests by attracting auxiliary fauna, repelling pests or increasing the production of our vegetables up to 20% thanks to pollinators. We have already seen other essential aromatics in our garden, such as rosemary, lavender, basil or thyme. Today we will see how and why plant sage in the garden or garden and the benefits it has.
The sage (salvia officinalis) will be planted in mid or late spring in its final place, although we can seed the previous spring to plant it, the ideal is to reproduce it by woody cutting at the end of summer or buy the plant in specialized nurseries or online . It is a shrubby plant about 50cm high with incredibly beautiful flowers and honey. We must choose a good place to put it, the best to the edges of the orchard as short - winds since it has a strong allelopathic power with some plants, that is, it can negatively affect the growth of some vegetables which putting it on the edges suits us very well to stop the entry of other herbs such as grass.
FLOOR
It is an aromatic that adapts to almost all types of soils so its cultivation is not very complicated, but we must try to be as acid as possible for a better development prefer calcareous soils that are light, dry and draining very well. Very clayey and heavy soils do not support them well and we can see their development affected.
SOLAR EXPOSITION
It is an aromatic that needs direct sun and also grows quickly with little care, so perfect for any garden or orchard, although it likes the sun dry land and good temperatures, it is a plant that can grow in semi-shade.
WEATHER
We cannot forget that its origin is Mediterranean, so it will develop much better in hot climates and winters not too hard, we will endure low temperatures although strong frosts can kill us so we would have to protect it. in fact in very humid climates we can get to have many problems with fungi.
IRRIGATION
Although it is smaller, it needs more frequent and abundant watering, irrigation should be moderate and light when we see dry land, it is a plant that tolerates drought well and we should always avoid soils that are wet or too wet, which may rot plant.
BENEFITS IN THE GARDEN
The benefit of having sage in the garden is that being a very melliferous plant helps us to improve the production of our garden by attracting pollinators, it is also very visited by aphids devouring insects which is always very interesting. But not only that, it helps us to repel harmful insects like the carrot fly, the ants, the whitefly, the cabbage butterfly, the aphids, slugs and snails, but as I said before, its roots inhibit the growth of some other plants so we can stick fresh branches between the crops that will serve us equally.
